More Portugal
Dave and I are now in the beach town of Nazare. We will stay here for two nights.
After a lovely day at the beach yesterday, we enjoyed the Festas do Mar in Cascais at night. It was a beautiful night and I wore the outfit I bought at the market earlier in the day. As we walked around the area of the fest we noticed a crowd gathering in front of the town museum. Upon inquiry, a nice lady told us that they were about to begin “Fado in the Window.” Fado is traditional Portugese music and song. We joined the throng and were treated to some beautiful guitar music and singing. Magical!
On our way to Nazare, for more Portugal adventures, we stopped in the lovely town of Obidos. They say it is nicer early in the day or in the evening after the tour busses are gone and we now believe them. We had read that two must-dos in Obidos are walking the ramparts of the town wall and enjoying a shot of the local cherry liqueur in a chocolate cup. We did both.
Dave was a terrific sport. Despite a bout of sciatica and his fear of heights, he walked the ramparts with me. Nobody mentioned that said ramparts go up quite high, have some really treacherous stairs, and have no railings. However, we got some beautiful photos of the town from way up high.
Upon our descent, we found a cute little guesthose where Dave got a well-deserved beer and I tried the aforementioned cherry liqueur. Yum! Dave tried his own shot further along our journey to the gate entering town. We both enjoyed this so much that we bought a bottle and a set of chocolate cups to enjoy on the rest of our journey through Portugal. I am enjoying a shot as I write this post from the balcony of our room at the Hotel Ribamar in Nazare.
So now we are in Nazare which is much more crowded than expected … and cold! After our full day, we decided to have dinner at the hotel restaurant overlooking the beach. Portugese paella, beautifully presented, so full of a variety of seafood, and delicious!
Tomorrow is supposed to be sunny and 74 degrees in Nazare so we’ll see what we decide to do. Ta-Ta from Portugal for now.
